The Afghan rugs, made from natural wool sourced from domesticated animal, is crafted by hand. The wool is spun into thread by hand, and then women handweave the threads into the rugs, which is locally referred to as “Kilim”or ‘’Gelim’’.
A gelim is a simple hand-woven textile made of warp (cotton or wool) and weft (wool), typically woven on an upright loom using the wool of domesticated animals. Each region has its own distinctive designs, and it is generally used as a rug. However, the weaving of gelim may have other uses among nomads, such as salt bags, horse blankets, or tent straps.
Rugs are one of the types of handicrafts used as floor coverings or textiles, woven from silk, goat hair, sheep wool, or the wool of other domesticated animals. Traditionally, rugs were used to cover floors, walls, or as saddle blankets for pack animals, but today they are also purchased as modern furnishings for urban homes.
Dyeing
In the past, rug weaving used yarn dyed with natural dyes, a tradition that continues in the production of high-quality and authentic traditional rugs to this day. Dyes are typically derived from plant and mineral sources, although animal sources such as cochineal may also be used. Usually, the warp threads, which are generally made from animal wool, are dyed, and the combination of these dyed threads creates the variety of patterns in rug weaving.
Warp Threads
Warp threads are usually made from cotton or wool.
Weft Threads
Weft threads are typically made from the wool of domesticated animals. In finer rugs, which were often used for decoration, threads made from animal down (obtained from the fine undercoat of animals) might also be used.”
